“Türkiye has the strength and maturity to make a new, civilian constitution”
Speaking at the Century of Türkiye Constitution Symposium, President Erdoğan said: “That the centenary of our Republic is being observed with a post-coup constitution is already a source of embarrassment for the political establishment. We can no longer inflict this shame on our nation just because otherwise some circles would be disturbed. Today the Turkish democracy has the strength and maturity to cross the threshold of making a new and civilian constitution.”
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a speech at a symposium held in the Democracy and Liberties Island on the Century of Türkiye Constitution, Civilian Constitution Strong Türkiye.
Underscoring that it is impossible for Türkiye continue its path with the current constitution, framework of which was drawn by putschists, President Erdoğan said: “That the centenary of our Republic is being observed with a post-coup constitution is already a source of embarrassment for the political establishment. We can no longer inflict this shame on our nation just because otherwise some circles would be disturbed. Today the Turkish democracy has the strength and maturity to cross the threshold of making a new and civilian constitution. I believe that it is a national duty for the political establishment to make a new constitution in the current 28th Legislative Term. As a government that has introduced the greatest victories of democracy in Türkiye, we will preserve our constructive and conciliatory attitude till the end. And, I suppose that our counterparts in the opposition will not be insistent, either, on imposing the post-coup constitution on our country.”
