President Erdoğan’s Message on UN Day
Following is the message President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan issued on October 24, United Nations Day and the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Organization:
“I wholeheartedly congratulate the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations, of which we are a founding member.
Our Organization, which was founded in light of the two successive world wars to promote international peace, solidarity and cooperation, has successfully overcome many challenges in the past 80 years.
Today, when we simultaneously fight against numerous threats such as wars, humanitarian crises, famine, poverty, Islamophobia, terror and climate change, the historic responsibility the UN has assumed grows bigger each passing day.
Undoubtedly, the duly fulfillment of these responsibilities will be possible only by protecting the UN’s fundamental principles and founding values in a stronger manner.
It is especially of critical importance that the UN Security Council, which is responsible for protecting international peace and security, be restructured in a manner that would meet the rightful expectations of the entire humanity.
The Security Council has not performed well in the Gaza genocide, where international law and the most fundamental humanitarian values have been trampled upon.
70 thousand Palestinians, over 20 thousand of them children, have been massacred, 170 thousand people have been injured, and Gaza has been turned into a huge debris, however the Security Council has failed to ensure the security of not just Gazans, but even UN workers.
Just like our maxim as ‘the World is Bigger than Five’, we consider the works aimed at carrying our Organization to the future with a stronger structure to be accurate, and support Mr. Secretary-General’s UN80 Initiative.
Within this framework, we aim to make our city Istanbul, which connects civilizations and continents with its qualified human resource as well as such elements as efficiency, cost and access means, a UN Center.
We as Türkiye will continue to work in order for peace, calm and security prevail in the whole world, starting from our region.
With these thoughts, I congratulate October 24, United Nations Day, and underscore on this occasion our will to take the steps that will once again make the Organization the hope of the humanity.”
