President Erdoğan: The cooperation we will display as Astana guarantors will be decisive for Syria’s future

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan addressed via videoconference the 6th Trilateral Summit Meeting in Astana Format held with the participation of President Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Hassan Rouhani of Iran.

Voicing his hope that the summit will lead to auspicious results for both the countries and the region, President Erdoğan conveyed his condolences to President Putin and President Rouhani for their losses due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“PRESERVING SYRIA’S POLITICAL UNITY AND TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY IS OUR TOP PRIORITY”

Drawing attention to the contribution the Trilateral Summit meetings have made to the restoration of peace, security and stability in Syria since November 2017, President Erdoğan said: “Preserving Syria’s political unity and territorial integrity, restoring peace on the ground and finding a lasting political resolution to the conflict are our top priorities. I am of the belief that we will, inshallah, maintain this momentum with today’s meeting. As Turkey, we have stood with our Syrian brothers and sisters since the beginning of the conflict. We have embraced millions of Syrian refugees, regardless of their ethnic identity, root and faith. We have exerted great efforts in order for Syria not to be divided in the hands of terrorist organizations. We have prevented humanitarian tragedies and separatist aims by actively intervening when need be.”

President Erdoğan further stressed: “We will continue to do our best in order for peace, security and stability to be immediately restored in our neighbor Syria. Undoubtedly, the cooperation we will display as Astana guarantors will be decisive for Syria’s future. I consider today’s meeting to be a step taken towards this ideal and thank you in advance for your contributions. I pray to my Lord that our discussions will lead to auspicious results for our Syrian brothers and sisters as well as for the entire region.”

Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and Minister of National Defense Hulusi Akar accompanied the President during the summit.
