“We have realized important projects in defense industry with our strategic partner South Korea”

Speaking at a joint press conference with President Lee of South Korea, President Erdoğan said: “We have thus far realized important projects in defense industry with our strategic partner South Korea. The Altay tank project is one of the most successful examples of this.”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan delivered remarks at a joint press conference with President Lee Jae Myung of the Republic of Korea at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.

Stating that they have held comprehensive talks today about all the aspects of the bilateral relations, President Erdoğan noted that they have addressed opportunities of cooperation in many areas from trade, tourism, energy and defense industry to infrastructure, transportation, science and technology, and added: “There is significant potential in the areas of artificial intelligence, semiconductors and battery technologies, innovation and renewable energy. Another important document has today been signed between our private sectors in the area of wind energy. Also, we have reached an agreement with our Korean friends to realize a joint project in the area of blood plasma.”

“WE AIM TO FURTHER DIVERSIFY JOINT PROJECTS IN DEFENSE INDUSTRY”

President Erdoğan continued as follows: “We have thus far realized important projects in defense industry as well with our strategic partner South Korea. The Altay tank project is one of the most successful examples of this. As you know, the delivery of our national tanks to our military began last month. We aim to further diversify joint projects in this area. During our talks, we have discussed that we can take many steps in defense industry with South Korea in the upcoming period. In the meantime, talks regarding the construction of a nuclear power plant continue between our relevant institutions. I consider the memorandum of understanding that has just been signed between Korea Electric Power Corporation and Türkiye Nuclear Energy Company to be an important step.”

Stating that besides the bilateral relations, they have also discussed regional and international matters, including Palestine, Ukraine, Syria and Korean peninsula, President Erdoğan said that they have agreed on maintaining the two country’s cooperation on international and regional platforms, particularly the United Nations, G20 and MIKTA, and went on to say: “We are very pleased that South Korea established diplomatic relations with Syria last April. We think that we can work together in different geographies such as Iraq, Africa and Middle East, including the reconstruction of Syria, Gaza and Ukraine.”

“WE EXPECT ALL THE FRIENDLY AND ALLIED COUNTRIES TO RECOGNIZE THE STATE OF PALESTINE”

Further stressing that as regards the situation in Gaza, Türkiye and South Korea defend the continuation of the ceasefire and a two-state solution, and do not want innocent people to be killed, President Erdoğan added: “The establishment of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East al-Quds as its capital, is a principle condition for fair and sustainable peace. In this sense, we as Türkiye expect all the friendly, brotherly and allied countries, which have yet to take a step to that end, to recognize the State of Palestine. As regards Ukraine, our attitude towards the termination of conflicts and the parties taking steps for a diplomatic solution at the negotiation table has never changed. As you have followed, I have held talks with both Mr. Zelenskyy and Mr. Putin this week. We as Türkiye will continue to support all the diplomatic initiatives, notably the Istanbul process, which will be carried out to establish lasting peace.”
